The original

Fitzbillies has been on Trumpington Street since 1920 — a fact that deserves a moment's consideration in a city that takes institutional longevity seriously. The original site is also the most complete: a bakery, a counter coffee bar, and a waiter-service tearoom all under one roof, with a cake selection that is broader here than anywhere else the brand operates.

It occupies the full experience of what Fitzbillies is: the warm, slightly faded grandeur of a Cambridge institution that has outlasted fashions, ownership changes, and every wave of food trend that has passed through this city since the 1920s. The regulars are fiercely loyal and entirely justified in their loyalty.

"Open since 1920 and still earning it. The Trumpington Street site is the full Fitzbillies experience — brunch, afternoon tea, Chelsea buns, and good coffee done properly."

— Dialled Coffee

The coffee and food

The counter coffee operation is efficient and quality-focused — artisan espresso, the full range of milk drinks, and filter options for those who want them. The café operates on two levels simultaneously: you can grab a takeaway coffee from the counter in under two minutes, or settle into the waiter-service tearoom for the kind of extended visit that Fitzbillies was built for.

The food menu covers brunch (served through the morning), a full lunch menu, and traditional English Afternoon Tea. The Chelsea bun is, of course, the reason most people first visit — sticky, generously proportioned, and exactly as good as the reputation suggests. The broader baking programme — fresh bread, a wide selection of cakes and pastries — is equally considered and far less famous than it should be.

Vibe and practicalities

Walk-ins are the default here, and much of the time you'll be seated immediately. For tables of six or more, or for Traditional Afternoon Tea, advance bookings are taken and recommended at weekends. The pace is unhurried — this is not a place designed for quick turnarounds, and the space doesn't feel like it.

Trumpington Street is central, easily walkable from the river and the Fitzwilliam Museum, and close to several of the main college sites. Opening from 8am Monday to Friday, 9am at weekends, until approximately 5pm.

Why Dialled picked it

Fitzbillies Trumpington Street is on this list because it is genuinely good and genuinely irreplaceable — there is no other café in Cambridge that offers this breadth of quality, this depth of history, and this consistency across everything it does. The Chelsea bun alone has earned more loyalty than most coffee bars earn in a lifetime. Over a century old and entirely worthy of the reputation.
