Four decades of roasting

Coffee World has been roasting coffee at their Milton site since 1984 — predating the speciality coffee movement by decades and outlasting every wave of coffee fashion that has passed through the UK since. In 2024, they opened an espresso bar at the heart of their roasting and training facility, which finally makes the operation accessible to people who aren't buying coffee in wholesale quantities.

The result is one of the more unusual coffee experiences available within easy reach of Cambridge: a working production roastery — two roasters, a 60kg Vittoria and a 15kg Giesen, genuinely in use — alongside a showcase espresso bar where you can drink what they make while watching the process that produces it.

"The espresso bar is the heartbeat at the centre of our training, wholesale and roasting facility — and sets the standard for speciality coffee."

— Coffee World

The roastery

The scale of the Coffee World operation puts it in a different category from the micro-roasteries that most speciality cafés operate. The 60kg Vittoria production roaster is a commercial-grade machine capable of producing the volumes that supply cafés and coffee shops across the region. The 15kg Giesen handles smaller, more precise batches — single-origins and experimental lots that require more careful attention.

Four decades of roasting has produced something that most newer operations can't fake: a deep institutional knowledge of how specific coffees behave, which origins reward which roast profiles, and how heritage blends should taste when they're done properly. Coffee World's blends have been supplying the region's cafés since before most of their customers were born.

The espresso bar and training academy

The 2024 espresso bar opening was the point at which Coffee World's expertise became available over a counter. The bar showcases the full range of what they roast — heritage espresso blends, filter blends, and hand-picked single origins — in the context of a properly equipped café operated to professional standards.

The training academy on the same site offers barista courses and coffee tasting experiences, including group sessions for up to 20 people. If you've ever wanted to understand how espresso actually works — extraction, grind, pressure, temperature — this is as good a classroom as exists in the region.

Getting there

Milton is three miles north of Cambridge city centre, easily reached by car or bike along the Cambridge Road. Open Monday to Saturday, broadly 8am to 5pm — always worth checking the website for current hours and to book training sessions in advance.

Why Dialled picked it

Coffee World is the rare example of a wholesale roastery that has opened its doors to the public in a way that actually rewards the visit. The combination of scale, heritage, and the 2024 espresso bar makes this one of the most genuinely educational coffee experiences within reach of Cambridge. Come here to understand coffee as much as to drink it — and drink it very well.
